Three Days to Go

Happy Thursday! Just three days to go!

WOW! It's Thursday already and things are looking great for the weekend and our BOPC-GMC show at Marge's Garden Restaurant at NOON on Sunday! We got the rain out of the sky (and into the leaky roofs!), the calls are really starting to come in from folks wanting to pre-register, and all our ducks are lining up.

Here's tonight's great news;

I am really happy to report that Miss Jackie has come through with her promise to get Soupy better. It may have cost her an ankle, but she got the job done! Welcome back Soupy! And to show just how "back" he is, Soupy has gotten all of his jobs done, including setting up the software program for the voting, which was an amazing thing. He is truly the 1978 TransAm Bandit Edition of computer gurus! At this point I should be thanking him, but there is so much more! He's put together the Registration flier, the Windshield Cards, the Judging Forms, Voting Tabulation Spreadsheet AND the Award Winner Spreadsheet! I just hope he has time to wash the T/A's and get Miss Limp-Along to the party on time. NOW I can say it; Thank You!

Paul 'No Smooch For You Either' Mack has taken the initiative and gotten us some Smoke Signal magazines from POCI and made copies of applications for POCI for us to use at the show. These will help out Debbie when people see how much fun we have and want to join our merry gang. Thank you, Paul!

I understand Ray (the guy The Beautiful Miss Caitlin lets drive her 'Bird) has gotten us some fine raffle prizes, and Debbie tells me she's bringing some baked goods for the bake sale. Nancy will be making lots of stuff that I pray someone ELSE buys, since if left alone I think I could find a home for all of the things she bakes! She's promised me/us Cup Cakes, Brownies with Walnuts and Raisins, Chocolate Chip cookies with surprise goodies in them and maybe another surprise or two. The club could get rich just on our bake sale! (And Tom could get even fatter!)

Ed, Johnnie and I are going to be bringing some used car parts for the swap meet area. I have no idea how big that will be but my plan is to lay out a blue tarp and just pile stuff on it. These things aren't just Pontiac parts. They can and will be most anything automotive. I have 3 Rambler hubcaps and some old tools I am donating to the cause. (Note to Ed and Soupy: NO ex wives please.)

GREAT NEWS TONIGHT! Letisha will be joining us and helping any way she can. I hope that means telling me to stop buying baked goods!

Tomorrow the trophies will be delivered to Johnnie, and I will be picking up the "CAR SHOW TODAY" signs and the yellow tee shirts. The reason we don't have any polo shirts is because I wasn't clear on how we left things with regards to the logo. At the last meeting we discussed changing it, but I didn't get any suggestions or other designs. Maybe we will get shirts for Turkey Run. That will be another day.

There will be one more of these E-mail's before the show, and tomorrow night (Friday) I will be at Tower Shops to recruit and to spread the happiness! I will park in the usual place so come one and all to see me and help out. I will be handing out fliers as well as making announcements on Scott the Musicman's PA system. Bring earplugs.

I think I will have to start coming up with new titles for everyone (in lieu of pay). Let me know if you have any preferences.

Be sure to bring your cameras Sunday. I need more sexy pictures!

Show Update

Hi Hurricane Chapter!

We're just a few days from Sunday's big Buick Oldsmobile Pontiac Cadillac and GMC show at Marge's Garden Restaurant, and I want everyone to know that things are going well. I have a few more things to tell everyone so you know what to expect come show time. Please keep in mind that it starts at NOON! (4400 North Andrews Ave., Oakland Park.) Here's tonight's HOT news:

I have (2) 8' long tables and (2) 5' long tables I am going to have at the show for us to use. We will have three things we need tables for: Registration, Bake sale and Raffle items. Debbie will be making sure everyone has their registrations, ballots and a place to leave large piles of cash for things like the 50-50 raffle and for applications to join our club (either POCI and our chapter or just POCI). Paul Mack: I believe you told me POCI sent you magazines and applications. We will need applications for joining our chapter too! Please correct me if I am wrong here.

I have not heard from any other vendor who may want to be there other than the Historical Society, and I believe they have their own tables and tents. That reminds me! If you have a tent-shelter that can be used at the show please bring it, as I only have one I am sure of and two others that may not work any more. I will test them out on Saturday!

The computer savvy Dawn has really done a good job on a blog site for us! Here it is, but I don't think it's 100% yet. Just log on to this site: http://hurricanechapterpoci.blogspot.com/ and you'll see what she's done. I hope to make this our 'touch stone', a place for us all to connect at and share information and help. I have NO idea how to work it yet, but I'm sure I will soon!

I will be bringing a large cooler or two for drinks, and I am hoping the restaurant will help us out with ice. These may or may not be for sale. What do you all think we should do? If Marges lets us sell water and soda we would need someone there to actually take money and monitor the situation, so if you think it's a good idea please be willing to volunteer some of your time. It will be really appreciated and will make for a happy day. Any input is appreciated!

Everyone please be sure to stay healthy. There's some nasty bugs going around and we really want to see you on Sunday at the show. So wash your hands, avoid people who appear ill, and keep your lips off door knobs.

It's Still On

For a quick update: Last week the owners of Margie's Garden Restaurant thought they really shouldn't put on a show, due to financial restraints. Silly me, I was used to Pines Pontiac wanting to pay for everything and just let us actually make money at a show. Why did we need money? The newsletter used to cost us lots, as did the other things we would buy with our name on it. Then there were all the odds and ends we don't do any more. So here's the new plan/thinking/philosophy:

1) The reason for a club sponsored car show is to show off members cars (our pride and joys!) to the world ! We polish them and fix them and pay lots of money to have them, so why not?

2) Other reasons for having a show include making our club known to attract more members; to have an excuse to all pull together for a single cause, helping to unify our friendships and associations; and to share the fun we've found in this hobby. There are a lot more reasons to have a car show, so we need to have one!

3) We are blessed with a bit of a "war chest", and can afford to sponsor a small show. This money isn't really slated for any particular use, and unlike a family financial plan, we don't really need to save for a rainy day. The money in the club is for our enjoyment purposes, not food, shelter, clothing or medicine. While spending it needs to be closely watched and carefully monitored, there really is no point having it just to watch a banker get rich on our interest.

So it's on! Now we need help with getting raffle prizes and help with the day of show stuff, like parking direction and general support. We also need your great cars, the stars of the show! Break out the polish and the vacuum cleaners, get the elbow grease going and plan on a great October 3!

Saturday's Great Time Just Got Better

BIG NEWS FOR THE HURRICANE CHAPTER!

This is terrific! Our own little club now has a High Supreme Commander Field Marshal General Admiral in Charge of Procuring Lunch! (I was moved to give him a field promotion without consulting the board of directors. We can vote him the official title while sampling their fine assortment of toothpicks after the eats!) It's our own JOHNNIE MACK! Look what he's found for us:

This Saturday, after we get our mugs on TV with the Discovery Channel show that is being filmed at Ted Vernon's place, and we get to see all his cars, wrecks, bombs, jalopy's and self-propelled rolling enigmas, then we're headed off to a lunch spot that's so great only a man of class, stature and fine up bringing could have found the joint! That may be why I couldn't find it. But I digress. Any way, here it is!

It's the Crab House Restaurant located at 1551 79th Street Causeway, just a short drive away from where we'll be looking at the cars and getting famous on TV!
There's a BIG parking lot with lots of room for us "B" Body guy's and gal's! There's no need to worry about anyone trying to launch our boats, since the Miami Beach PD regularly patrol's the place (and eats there!).
A fine assortment of libations to get the dust of the trail off our throats is available right inside the door, so there's less waiting time at the pump.
A buffet we can put a serious hurtin' on for $19.95. Lunches run $10-$12 (this is real food, not burgers in a basket!)
Those windows face out over the water. It's a great view!

I'm really fired up about this. The place is really classy, easy to get to, easy to leave and offers first class amenities. Dress is informal during lunch so don't worry about wearing our club shirts or tee shirts. They even have bibs for those who may need them (no names, ok Ed?)

The plan is simple (I came up with it!): Friday night we will have a driver's meeting at Tower Shops if anyone wants directions. Saturday Morning the northern crew (Anyone who is north of Tower Shops!) will meet in the TS parking lot between 10AM and 10:30, with a roll out about 10:30. We will go I-95 (no toll booth to delay us) down to Exit 7, the 79th St. exit, then head EAST (turn left) for (1) one mile. At this point we go over a small bridge and turn LEFT into the parking lot for PRESIDENT SUPERMARKET, where we'll park right out front by the street. Ted's place is right around the back of this building, and I want to give the video crew time to set up for our GRANDE ENTRANCE. Then we'll tool on in and shock the Discovery Channel right off the air!

If you're going without us, that's fine. If you're coming from the south the directions are the same, just take Exit 7 and go east. That's a short exit ramp so down shift early. Please wait at the supermarket parking lot.

We should all meet at the supermarket parking lot between 11 and 11:15. Call me if there are any break downs or lost souls. (954) 325-9620. In the event of rain we'll go anyway. If you don't want to risk your Pontiac in bad weather please come in your daily driver. Bring your family and friends, since the more the merrier! Just make sure they've had their shots.

Just so you've been warned...The cars we're going to look at are seriously for sale, and Ted is a wheeler dealer. Prices are stupid but he'll listen to offers and would rather trade for your car than take cash. Since they are doing this show about him they really want to show Ted wheeling and dealing, and making a deal, so you may be able to steal something so it looks good on the camera!

More in an E-mail tomorrow. Please write me back and let me know what you think of this. I would like a head count too, since the restaurant would like some advance notice. Tell me which car you'll bring as well.

Toplessly Yours,
Tom Martin
